Website with humanitarian intentions

The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is an independent international health professional organization that promotes and supports rehabilitation of torture victims and works to prevent torture around the world.

IRCT cooperates with a global network of around 200 rehabilitation centres and programs and is closely connected to governments, human rights organizations and other health organizations.

Naturally, both the organizations internal as well as external communication is of great importance in connection to their activities, as torture prevention requires visibility and good communicative tools to be effective. They therefore contacted the web bureau Xtendit, who was assigned the task of building a website that could support IRCT’s activities.

From idea to action

Xtendits demand analysis showed that IRCT’s website would work optimally on a Dynamicweb Business solution, as the website had to contain more than 45 pages, which is the maximum for a Dynamicweb Light solution. At the same time there was no need to construct the website on a Dynamicweb Portal solution, as the website did not have to be integrated with several other business solutions. The extra modules that Dynamicweb Portal offers, proved unnecessary from according to the IRCT demand analysis.

Furthermore, the expected number of visitors on the website did not exceed 700 pr. day and the IRCT therefore decided to run the solution on a MS Access database, which in turn meant low monthly expenses, as the cost for SOL-hosting did not become relevant. Naturally the possibility of upgrading the website to a Dynamicweb Portal and/or a SQL-server is retained, should the need arise later on.

Xtendit on the one hand tried to minimize both our start-up costs as well as our monthly expenditures, while on the other hand ensuring that our website could fulfil our future requirements. We are therefore pleased that our partner focused so intensely on analysing our needs. Seen in retrospect the close cooperation with our partner turned out to be a great advantage, as the website now is capable of supporting all our activities optimally – also without straining our budgets more than we find reasonable.” Says Margareth Marmori from the IRCT.

One of the most central elements on the new IRCT website is the extranet, which is constructed on the Dynamicweb Extranet/Intranet module. IRCT is constantly in dialog with over 100 rehabilitation centres around the world and the extranet offers IRCT the possibility of communicating and sharing knowledge with the centres.

Furthermore the centres are, through the module Dynamicweb forum, able to use the extranet to exchange experience and share knowledge with the other centres – without being limited by geographical distances.

In addition to using the extranet as a communications channel, the IRCT is also frequently employs the modules Dynamicweb News and Dynamicweb Newsletter for informing their partners on current and future activities that contributes in the work towards a world without torture. The IRCT thus updates its news content 3 times a week, providing the website with an enormous news value to the partners the world over.

Moreover the website contains additional documents and other elements that contribute in making the website an essential communication tool to the IRCT. That the tool according to the IRCT is easy to use obviously facilitates the incorporation of the tool in the many centres around the world – and the IRCT therefore looks forward to exploring how the website can be used in further promoting the prevention of torture worldwide.

The organisation has special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council and the UN Department of Public Information, and participatory status with the Council of Europe.
 
The IRCT works closely with health professional organisations, including the World Medical Association (WMA), the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT), the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and Physicians for Human Rights (PHR).
