May - SOSU FYN

May 2007 : SOSU FYN

Educational centre with focus on health

Three Danish Social and Healthcare Schools on the island of Funen were on January 1st 2007 merged to form the Social and Healthcare School Funen (Social og Sundhedsskolen FYN); or in everyday language SOSU FYN. The purpose of the new school is to educate and retrain students to undertake basic tasks within the areas of assistance, care and nurture. The merger of what were previously three different administrative units, created the need for a new common appearance on the internet.

“A super efficient course of events”. This is how IntraNote's project manager, Bettina Graabech, characterizes the co-operation between IntraNote and the Social and Healthcare School Funen in the period prior to the launch of the new website.

In a year we have gone from being three schools under the County of Fynen, to one independent institution referring to the Ministry of education. It placed some entirely different requirements on us. The new status means that we have lost our financial safety net, so to speak. Therefore we had to be much better at marketing the school. Here the new website has been a central element.

Andreas Kubsch

- Teacher and website responsible, The Social and Healthcare School Funen

The Social and Healthcare School Funen started the planning of the internet merger at an early stage. Until the summer of 2006 their website ran on a temporary portal made available by the County of Fynen, but a number of limitations made it necessary to start the search for an alternative. When IntraNote proposed a Dynamicweb solution for the website and their intranet for the internal communication, the schools search was over and a new co-operation established.

SOSU FYN came to us in November”, explains Bettina Graabech from IntraNote. “At that time they needed to launch a new website on January 1st. We held an initial workshop were we uncovered target audience and brainstormed over design and structure – and then we simply started working. I was very impressed with the work effort they displayed. They were very focused and we quickly established the entire website.

The design part was headed by IntraNotes graphic designer, Iben Louise Birkkjær Christensen, with basis in the schools desired visual identity and the defined target audience. This consisted of both students, course participants, potential applicants and cooperating partners. The challenge was therefore to combine it all in one website which had a clear layout and was easily accessible. “A logical universe which is easy to navigate”, as Andreas Kubsch states it. After a few adjustments of the layout, which were handled over the telephone, the Social and Healthcare School Funen was ready to take care of the content.

An efficient tool

Despite the limited time available for the development it was important that the website was tested and ready for the launch date, while at the same time offered possibilities for further development as the website entered daily use. The new website was therefore implemented on a Dynamicweb portal solution, which offered the right tools for developing and adding new content. The creation of the content side itself, took place from November until the Christmas holiday and was handled by the IT responsible at SOSU FYN.

In reality it is a testimony to how easy it is to work with Dynamicweb’s CMS solutions – one introductory course was enough” says Andreas Kubsch. “And it has been a clear improvement. By using the date and time settings we are able to be much more proactive in our work. Previously, all our communication had to be done on the spot. Today however, we are much better able to anticipate and prepare the texts in due time – with the reassurance that they will be displayed on the website at exactly the right moment."

In addition to Dynamicweb Publication Period, for controlling when the different paragraphs are visible on the website, a number of other modules are also used on the website to increase both efficiency as well as user experience. Among the modules used is for instance Dynamicweb Newsletter, which enables users to select and receive newsletters on subjects that are especially interesting to them. The new website thus not only unites the three schools presence on the internet, but offers entirely new possibilities for development.

The Social and Healthcare School Funen in Brief

The Social and Healthcare School Funen, SOSU FYN, was created January 1st 2007 as part of the nationwide structural reform and the closure of the Danish counties. The school has 120 employees and approximately 850 yearly students on three different locations. The three former schools are today administered as one unified, self-governing institution.

The school offers educational programs for social and healthcare worker, social and healthcare assistant, the basic pedagogic education as well as a number of labour market training courses.
