September - Hecksher

September 2006 : Hecksher Lineragencies Ltd.

Website with a fair wind

Hecksher Lineragencies Ltd. is the oldest shipping company in Denmark with a business record of more than 200 years. The company has offices in several countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Hecksher realized that they needed a website which was capable of unifying these geographically dispersed offices in a single web solution, making it possible to manage their external communication from a central location. Moreover, Hecksher wanted a website which was able to communicate their unique company history to the world, directly as well as indirectly.

The customer and the customer’s customer

In order to build a website which could live up to these requirements, Hecksher chose to contact Frunk Digital Communication. The agency’s core competency is developing customized web solutions which focus on the customer, the product and its customers.

"We believe that it is essential to develop solutions which meet the needs of both our customer and our customer’s customer. Moreover, we believe that it is important to guide our customers in a language that they can relate to and on a level that compares to our customer’s company.
For this reason, we decided to analyze Hecksher’s branch of trade and the workflows in the organization by holding a number of meetings. This enabled us to learn about the company and elucidate their needs"

- Frank Madsen

CEO, Frunk Digital Communication

From this dialogue, Frunk Digital Communication was able to identify a number of challenges which had to be addressed:

  • How could Hecksher use fewer resources? Both the resources used to carry out the daily tasks and resources used in connection with their customer communication.
  • What was an optimal website in the eyes of the customers and what should the website contain in order to receive more visitors?
  • How could Hecksher reach more partners with relevant news?
  • Hecksher has a unique company history. How could this story be communicated in an interesting and exciting way?

From design to implementation

On the new website, a module was developed which displays current oil prices, exchange rates and the risk of war at various shipping destinations; information, which is crucial in connection with entering into shipping agreements. In addition to displaying the current situation, the module is also capable of displaying previous developments which provide a more adequate basis for decisions for Hecksher’s shipping employees.

Moreover, Dynamicweb has been integrated with Hecksher’s own Track-and-Trace service. This means fewer phone calls and mails to Hecksher’s employees as customers are able to follow the shipment of their goods by using the new Shipment Information System.

In addition to these tools above, which were developed by using the module Dynamicweb Developer, the website is also used to inform visitors of the latest news and development tendencies by using the News module.

On the website, visitors are also able to sign up for segmented, targeted information by using the module Newsletter, Extended. As information can be sent out to all partners from a central location, Hecksher’s external communication has been significantly improved.

Frunk Digital Communication also chose to develop a Flash-based movie for the website which narrates Hecksher’s unique history. Flash was used as it is a powerful, visual tool which can be used to create interactive movies. In this way, the Hecksher story could be told in a dynamic and interesting way.

In addition to developing a movie for our website, Frunk Digital Communication also developed a number of different tools which support various workflows in our company. Due to the flexible structure of Dynamicweb, these tools could easily be implemented into our website. Thus, our website actually became a tool for both our customers and our employees”, says Søren Folmann, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Hecksher.

Thus, Hecksher’s new website, which is built on a Dynamicweb Business solution, means that both visitors and employees now have a new range of tools at their disposal which facilitate the company in reaching their objective: To use their extensive experience to be at the forefront of developments at all times…!
